TBH, there are just too many ways to stay in touch with your boyfriend, even when you guys are miles apart. 

I live only 13 kms away from my partner – and I still rely heavily on WhatsApp for daily chats, Google Calendar for our plans, Instagram for sharing reels, and Google Photos for shared albums.

But these are pretty common – you will be surprised to know that there are several apps built around relationships, communication, and dating.

And while checking out some such apps, I came across Between six months ago. 

FYI, Between is a sort of private messaging app designed exclusively for couples – you can text, share media, create memories, plan dates, and more. But the catch is the app caters to couples and not a larger social network. 

Also, I found out that this app has been around for years – and continues to be very active with new updates. Moreover, currently the app’s Android listing shows over 10 million downloads and 500K reviews. 

For me, that sounds super promising. But in reality, I have seen that a long list of features doesn’t make an app valuable automatically. 

So, I thought of checking it out – and for the sake of writing this blog, I made my boyfriend download the same app. The point? To find out if Between can offer couples something that they fail to get from the apps they are already using. 

In that case, is it worth downloading this app? More importantly, is it worth paying for? And today, I’ll do a deep dive into Between, breaking down what this app gets, and more importantly, where it falls short.

What Is Between?

Between is a private app designed specifically for couples.

Instead of putting your relationship inside a general messaging or social media app, Between gives you a separate space for the two of you.

You can use it to chat, share photos and videos, save notes, keep track of special dates, and create a record of your relationship.

The app also includes features such as a love counter, anniversaries, birthdays, and other relationship milestones. Its current Android listing describes it as a space for couples to stay connected, save memories, and keep track of important moments.

The idea is simple: Your relationship gets its own digital space.

That distinction matters because Between is not really trying to beat WhatsApp at messaging. It is trying to make the conversation feel more personal by putting everything related to your relationship in one place.

What Can You Actually Do On Between?

The first thing we saw after downloading this app was its long list of features. 

But as I was telling you just a while back, a long list of features necessarily doesn’t mean it’s the right app for my relationship. 

So, we sat down and spent some time checking these features out for real. And then we tried using these features. 

After using Between for six months, here are the features worth paying attention to. 

1. Private Messaging For Two:

At its core, Between is a messaging app for two people. And that is super convenient for anyone who wants to keep chats with their partner separate from work and family chats. 

So, the advantage here isn’t necessarily improved texting. WhatsApp and other messaging apps already do that very well.

The difference is the setting.

Between makes the conversation part of a private relationship space rather than another general-purpose inbox.

Also, the app offers relationship-focused messaging features, including stickers and GIF-style content. Its iOS listing describes the chat as a messenger designed specifically for two people.

2. Save Photos And Videos:

Between also works as a place to store memories.

You can save photos, videos, and notes connected to your relationship. The app’s current listing says users can organize memories and keep their content available when changing phones.

This is probably one of the more useful reasons to use the app.

Most couples already have hundreds of photos together. The problem is finding them later, considering they might just be scattered across socials, WhatsApp chats, and random corners of the gallery. 

Between gives those memories a dedicated home. That can become more valuable over time.

One long-term App Store reviewer, for example, said they could still access photos, albums, and conversations from years earlier. That is a good example of the trade-off.

Also, to be fair, Between can make your relationship history easier to preserve, but it may not be as flexible as a general messaging platform.

3. Keep Track Of Important Dates:

Between also puts relationship dates in one place.

You can track important relationship milestones including anniversaries, birthdays, and other significant dates. Also, there is a love counter on the app that displays how long you guys have been together. 

I think it is essential to highlight that this is a pretty small feature. But since I am trying to cover details, it is essential to mention this one. 

You are not just storing messages. You are building a timeline of the relationship.

For couples who enjoy celebrating milestones, that can be fun. However, for couples who do not care about counting days together, it may feel unnecessary.

4. Shared Schedules:

Between also includes ways to keep track of schedules and special days. That can be useful when two people have different work hours, social plans, or commitments.

But this is also where you have to ask whether you really need Between.

Google Calendar already handles shared schedules extremely well. So the value here comes from convenience rather than a completely new function.

If you already use a shared calendar, Between may not replace it.

But if you want your relationship-related plans in the same place as your conversations and memories, it can make sense.

5. Relationship-Focused Extras:

Between also includes more playful features.

For example, Between Plus includes premium stickers, themes, high-quality photo downloads, bulk downloads of photos, videos, and notes, and custom app icons. It also includes features such as scheduled love letters.

These features are not essential. That is not necessarily a problem. Not every feature in a couples app needs to solve a serious relationship problem.

Sometimes, you might be looking for something personal – something that’s cute and private. What’s important is to be aware of where your money is going.

Between Vs WhatsApp: What’s The Difference?

This is probably the biggest question for anyone considering Between – if you already use WhatsApp to text your boyfriend, then why opt for this app? 

Frankly, it’s not about finding a substitute for WhatsApp – and you don’t need to switch entirely to another ‘texting’ app. Between serves a different purpose.

Truth be told, WhatsApp is a general communication tool. But Between is more specialized.  And that is both its biggest strength and its biggest weakness.

So, if you need just one app for dealing with everything, then WhatsApp obviously makes more sense. 

However, if you and your boyfriend (like us) are looking for a separate digital space just for the two of you, then checking you Between definitely makes sense for you guys.

Is Between Useful For Long-Distance Couples?

This is one situation where a couples app can make more sense.

Long-distance relationships often involve ordinary moments rather than dramatic ones.

You want to send your partner a picture of your lunch. You want to remember an important date. Also, you want to share something funny that happened today.

Between gives those small interactions a shared space. It can also make it easier to keep photos and relationship milestones together.

But the app cannot solve the difficult parts of a long-distance relationship:

• It cannot replace a conversation when one of you feels lonely.
• It cannot make different schedules disappear.
• And it cannot create emotional closeness on its own.

The app can make staying connected easier – the actual connection still depends on the people using it.

Is Between Useful If You Live Together?

This is where the app becomes more subjective. 

If you see your partner every day, you may wonder why you need a couples app at all. That is a fair question.

Between can still be useful if you enjoy saving memories, sharing photos, planning things, or keeping track of important dates.

It can also become a digital scrapbook of your relationship.

Think of it this way: WhatsApp is where you talk. Between can become where you keep the story of your relationship.

But if you already have a system that works, you may not need another one.

That is an important point because Between is not a necessary app for couples – It is an optional one.

What I Like About Between:

The strongest thing about Between is its focus. It does not try to be another social network. It gives couples a space that is specifically theirs.

That makes the app feel different from ordinary messaging platforms.

1. It Keeps Relationship Content Together:

Photos, conversations, dates, and memories can live in one place. That is useful when you want to look back at your relationship later.

2. It Is Built Around Two People:

There are no family groups, work chats, or random notifications competing for attention inside the relationship space. That can make the app feel more personal.

3. It Can Become More Valuable Over Time:

This is probably the most interesting part. A messaging app is useful because of what you are doing today. 

Between can also become useful because of what you did months or years ago. The longer you use it, the more memories you have stored there.

Some long-term users have specifically highlighted this benefit. One App Store reviewer said they could still access old photos, albums, and conversations after many years of using the app.

That gives Between something that a normal messaging app does not always provide.

Where Between Falls Short?

A good review should also talk about what does not work. Between has a clear concept, but it is not perfect.

1. You May Not Need Another Messaging App:

This is the biggest issue.

Most couples already have a messaging app they use every day. Getting both people to move their conversations to another platform takes effort.

So, if Between does not become part of your routine, its extra features will not matter much.

2. Some Features Overlap With Apps You Already Have:

Photos can live in Google Photos. Schedules can live in Google Calendar. And messages can live in WhatsApp.

Between’s advantage comes from bringing these things together. So, if you prefer specialized apps for each task, you may not see much value in that.

3. Some Users Have Reported Usability Issues:

User feedback also points to smaller frustrations.

One reviewer complained about limits around photo uploads and the lack of a search feature for albums. Another praised the shared scheduling tools but found voice recording cumbersome.

These are not deal-breakers for everyone. But they show why a feature list alone does not tell you whether an app is good.

The little things matter when you use an app regularly.

Is Between Private And Safe?

Privacy deserves extra attention here.

Between handles information that can be highly personal. That can include messages, photos, relationship information, account details, and other data connected to your use of the service.

Between’s current privacy policy says it collects information such as email addresses, names or nicknames, phone numbers, profile images, device information, purchase history, and certain usage information. 

Also, it states that information may be transferred internationally when necessary to operate its services.

Moreover, the policy says the company uses industry-standard measures to protect information, while noting that no online transmission or storage method can be guaranteed completely secure.

The Google Play listing currently says data is encrypted in transit and that users can request deletion of their data. It also states that the app may collect location and personal information and may share some data with third parties.

That does not automatically make Between unsafe. It does mean you should understand what you are putting into the app.

There is another point worth checking before uploading very personal content.

Between’s terms contain broad provisions concerning user-created content and the rights granted to the company. Anyone storing highly personal photos or other sensitive material should read the current terms and privacy policy before using the service.

For any couples app, that is worth taking seriously.

How Much Does Between Cost?

Between has a free version and a paid Between Plus option.

The exact price can vary depending on your country, platform, and subscription option, so it is better to check the price shown in your App Store or Google Play listing before subscribing.

Between Plus adds features such as premium stickers, high-quality photo downloads, bulk downloads, themes, app icons, and an extended recovery period after disconnecting from a partner. Only one partner needs to purchase Plus for both partners to use the premium service.

There are also subscription and lifetime options.

The subscription plans can renew automatically, while Between’s help documentation says the Couple Lifetime Plan is tied to the connected couple and has different conditions. The company also states that payments are non-refundable once processed.

So, do you need Between Plus? Probably not when you first start. Instead, try the free version first.

If you find yourself using the app regularly and want the extra storage and customization features, then paying may make more sense.

Is Between Worth Paying For?

This depends on what you want from the app. So, if you only want to send messages to your partner, paying for Between is difficult to justify.

You already have plenty of free options.

The value becomes clearer if you want to use Between as a long-term relationship archive.

But if you regularly save photos, keep memories, use shared features, and enjoy the relationship-focused extras, the premium version can offer more value.

Having said that, there is no reason to pay simply because the app has more features. More features do not always mean more usefulness.

Who Should Use Between?

Between makes the most sense for couples who want a dedicated space for their relationship.

You may enjoy it if you:

• want a private space for you and your partner.
• enjoy saving photos and relationship memories.
• like keeping track of anniversaries and milestones.
• are in a long-distance relationship.
• enjoy small, relationship-focused features.
• want to keep your couple conversations separate from other chats.
• like the idea of building a digital record of your relationship.

Also, you may want to skip it if you:

• do not want another app.
• already do everything on WhatsApp.
• can’t get your partner to use it.
• rarely save photos or relationship memories.
• already use separate apps for calendars, photos, and notes.
• are mainly looking for a messaging app.

That last point is important. 

So, Between works best when both people actually want the experience. If one person downloads it and the other never opens it, most of its value disappears.

Between App Review: Final Verdict

Between is not a replacement for WhatsApp – frankly, it does not need to be.

Its appeal comes from doing something much narrower. It gives couples a private digital space where conversations, photos, memories, schedules, and milestones can stay together.

That makes it interesting for couples who enjoy documenting their relationship.

Also, it may be particularly useful for long-distance couples who want a shared space for everyday moments.

But Between is not essential.

So, if you already communicate happily through WhatsApp and store your photos elsewhere, you may not gain enough from adding another app.

The same goes for couples who do not care about relationship trackers, digital memories, or extra features.

So, is Between worth trying? Yes, if you want a dedicated space for your relationship. Probably not, if you simply want another way to text your partner.

The best reason to use Between is not any single feature.

Instead, it is the idea of having one place that belongs to the two of you.

And if you keep using it for years, that space could become more valuable than it seemed when you first downloaded the app.
