For instance, if he has a dog in his DP and it’s obvious he is a dog parent, then everyone is already asking him about his pet. So, no point asking him about his pet or even throwing a few random compliments – it shows you are dying to talk to him.

Instead, how about asking him about his dog’s vet – ‘Hi, since we are located close to each other, and this might sound really weird, but can you tell me about your vet? I really need a new vet for my dog, and I can’t find someone in the area.’

This message is so much better than calling someone’s dog cute – of course, you can add a compliment here and there. But it is always safer to play innocent – I didn’t text you because I specifically wanted to talk to you. I texted you because we both have dogs and we are located close to each other.
