How Does Hinge Work

How does Hinge work? With over 30 million users across the globe, Hinge is one of the most popular apps that currently exists.

But with so many people using dating apps currently, it is worth asking, how do these apps even work?

Moreover, how do these apps even match you with prospective matches? How does any algorithm know who is right for you? Is there any complicated data analysis working behind the scenes? Or is it only luck at play?

Launched over a decade ago in 2013, Hinge started its journey as a competitor to Tinder. But in order to carve out its own market, Hinge prioritized long-term relationships over anything casual.

Hence, its tagline says, “Designed to be deleted.”

At least, in theory, Hinge talks about helping people find their forever partners instead of endless swiping and dead-end connections.

Of course, the reality is different – what you will find on the app significantly depends on your preferences and those of the ones you are matching with.

Also, thanks to the relatively large user base of Hinge, there’s a major possibility that whatever you are seeking in real life, you will find on the app.

So, if you are planning to try out Hinge, here’s all that you need to know to make it work effectively for you.

How Does Hinge Work?

How Does Hinge Work?

Hinge’s algorithm matches users based on their compatibility. Similar to other popular dating apps, Hinge has never shared information about how its algorithm does the magic.

I have tried reaching out to them, but they never replied. And I’m not alone. They also declined to comment when Cosmopolitan approached them about their algorithm.

So, are popular dating apps hiding their eligible users behind some sort of paywall? I guess we will never find out.

Due to the lack of transparency, there are many conspiracy theories about how dating app algorithms match users. Also, it does make you question whether it is possible to hack this algorithm for better matches?

Interestingly, once such a theory even suggests that Hinge will show you profiles you are compatible with once you finish your free likes for the day, only to make you sign up for their paid plans.

Moreover, another theory suggests that Hinge intentionally shows you profiles with fewer likes initially. Having said that, I cannot ignore the obvious truth: these are just theories that lack data to support them.

So, if you are not getting enough likes, it could just be the algorithm, with no idea what you really need.

Maybe it’s not always a conspiracy – maybe, dating apps are not always the best solution for modern love.

Additionally, Hinge prides itself on consistently working to create a positive dating experience for its users. Justin McLeod, the CEO of Hinge, recently spoke about Hinge Labs on the Diary of a CEO podcast.

He said, “Hinge Labs was developed to study Hinge daters who were successful, study daters who were not successful, and figure out what were the patterns and how can we help everyone to level up and help everyone become better and more successful daters.

Hinge Algorithm Explained:

Generally, dating apps operate on an algorithm that takes all the data available on your profile to find you potential matches.

But Hinge’s algorithm specifically functions to initiate meaningful connections and deep conversations between its users. The purpose? Successful first dates!

Interestingly, I came across an article on Bustle in which an insider apparently explains how Hinge’s algorithm works.

According to this article, Hinge is modeled after the Gale-Shapley algorithm – not entirely, but partially. FYI, the Gale-Shapley framework was created as a solution to the ‘stable marriage problem.’

In such scenarios, an equal number of women and men rank people of the opposite sex. How? Based on their preferences. Then, the matching occurs so that no two individuals are paired with anyone they did not select.

So, in simple terms, it means you were paired with someone you like and who also likes you back – at least in theory.

And the perfect instance of how the ‘most compatible’ feature of Hinge works.

The same spokesperson told Bustle, “For all daters, Hinge refreshes your ‘most compatible’ every 24 hours based on the latest information we’ve learned about you, such as preferences, previous interactions, and recent activity. Through a combination of machine learning and the Nobel-prize-winning Gale Shapley algorithm, [the] ‘most compatible’ [function] pairs members with the person they’re most likely to have a great first date with.

Also, the ‘standout’ feature is another example of this algorithm at work. With this feature, Hinge curates a list of people it believes are most compatible with you.

Once you have gone through the list and picked profiles that appeal to you, you can send roses to them. As per data, sending roses is twice as likely to get you a date. Hinge simply takes into consideration your preferences, previous interactions, and recent likes.

How Accurate Is The Hinge Algorithm?

How Accurate Is The Hinge Algorithm

While the Hinge algorithm seems convincing in theory, in reality, there is no way to quantify how successful it is at creating perfect matches.

Having said that, the dating app does have enough information on how often matches turn out to be successful. Moreover, the app also has data on how many first dates were successful and which ones led to a second date.

In this context, the brand’s spokesperson said (to Bustle), “Once two people match, we follow up a few days later via our in-app survey — called ‘we met’ — and ask each person privately if they went on a date and if they’re the type of person they’d like to see again. Hinge is the only dating app that does this, and 80% of our users report going on dates and wanting to see the person again.

So, if you have been itching to test whether Hinge can help you find a new love match, just give it a try! Who knows? You might just end up finding something real for a change.

How To Get Matches Faster On Hinge? 3 Proven Strategies That Always Work:

How To Get Matches Faster On Hinge? 3 Proven Strategies That Always Work:

So you already know how does Hinge works, but will that information alone allow you to get matches faster on the dating app? I don’t think so.

As a result, here are three proven strategies to make the most of Hinge’s algorithm to make better matches.

1. Photos Are IMPORTANT:

I am sorry to break your bubble, but he is not going to fall in love with your personality on a dating app. I mean, your first impression is your last impression on popular dating apps, including Hinge.

And since you cannot send pictures on Hinge, your profile is the only space you have to experiment with pictures. So, this is all you get – you have to make the most of it.

As a result, while selecting pictures for Hinge, here are some tips to remember:

a) Avoid group pictures.

b) Avoid adding too many pictures.

c) Ensure that your face is clearly visible in your pictures.

d) Aim for variety while adding pictures.

e) Also, choose pictures that show your personality.

2. Make Your Profile Appealing:

As I was saying, your profile is all you have got, and if you don’t work on your profile, then there’s no point – you will just not get enough visibility, likes, or even matches.

While choosing the right pictures is perhaps the most important aspect of making your profile, your next priority should be your bio and the rest of your profile.

Moreover, writing the perfect bio isn’t really easy – and AI can only help you so much.

Also, you need to remember that your profile offers the opportunity to start a conversation with you. As a result, you need to make the most of it. Here’s how?

a) Express different sides of your personality.

b) Create a balance between vulnerability and humor.

c) Use prompts that you can easily (and honestly) answer.

d) Avoid saying anything on your profile that is generic, cringeworthy, or uninspired.

3. Focus On ‘How’ You Are Talking, Not ‘What:’

This one’s true for conversations everywhere, quite literally – and not just during fights when people end up saying, ‘it’s not what you said, it’s how you said it.’

When it comes to dating apps, how you engage with your matches makes all the difference. Think about yourself like a product – your pictures, bio, and the rest of your profile are all part of the packaging.

But once you have some matches, how you engage with them makes all the difference. And the strategy here is simple – be authentic, transparent, and most importantly, kind.

On that note, here are some tips that can help you to improve your interactions and engagement on Hinge:

a) Send texts with your likes. Why? Adding comments with your likes doubles your probability of matching with someone nice.

b) Ensure you are polite and active in your interactions on Hinge. Why? Interacting quickly with your matches and maintaining fun conversations increases your success rate.

c) Be kind but be selective. How? You don’t need to like everyone – instead, just like people who really interest you. This will improve the algorithm’s perception of your profile.

Is Hinge Worth It Compared To Other Dating Apps?

Like all dating apps, Hinge is a sort of tool – it is not a remedy. What does that mean?

While the app helps users find potential love matches and meet people whom they might not have even crossed paths with otherwise, what happens next is the user’s responsibility.

So, Hinge will help you meet people, but will it lead to something serious? It might and it might not – anything can happen, much like our lives.

I even checked a subreddit called r/Hingeapp, where users have given mixed responses.

One user had said, “Hinge is definitely way better than Bumble. I rarely get matches on Bumble but get around 3-4 on Hinge every week.

Another user said, “It’s not really about Hinge ‘working’ or ‘not working’ — ultimately, there are real people using this app, and it’s absolutely possible to get good connections from it. But that’s because of you two, not because Hinge ‘works.’ That’s like meeting your girlfriend in a park and saying the park works.

Sadly, it comes down to our goddam luck. No dating app can guarantee whether or not you will meet your soulmate on the app.

So, don’t let any app promise you that – the number of matches or likes you get on Hinge or anywhere else isn’t a marker of what you deserve! Ditch the stress, and have fun swiping instead!
