Is Hinge A Good Dating App

I have been writing about modern love, sex, and relationships for seven years now.

And while Swipe Right Stories is my newest venture, I have reviewed and tested many dating apps over the years. Hinge is perhaps the one app I get asked about all the time.

I’ll tell you why – you might not agree with me, but deep down you know how Hinge is the perfect landing spot for anyone who is horny but doesn’t want to admit it – and wouldn’t want to be caught dead on Bumble or Tinder.

Also, Hinge is really for people who are ready to adopt a dog and swap keys. After all, the app’s famous tagline says, ‘designed to be deleted.’

Plus, Hinge is where people are landing when they are trying to have a real conversation with someone they are attracted to.

Interestingly, some of my fellow bloggers at work and even a few of my closest friends have met ‘the one’ on Hinge. One has moved in with her Hinge match. So, I know how Hinge works.

But is Hinge a good dating app for you? To help you make the decision whether the app is worth your time and energy, I’ve dissected all that you need to know about this dating app.

Stay tuned.

ProsCons
1. Build for effective (and not mindless) swiping.1. You will hit the paywall really fast.
2. Profiles are relatively more human, thanks to photo likes and prompts.2. Prompts aren’t for everyone – some treat them like open mic sessions (and not in a good way.)
3. Solid safety and privacy infrastructure.3. Roses are a cool way to say you like someone.

Is Hinge A Good Dating App? Free Features:

Is Hinge A Good Dating App? Free Features:

I was very impressed with the free version of Hinge – and these four features I’ve highlighted below make Hinge my favorite dating app at the moment.

And especially because I wasn’t planning on going for a paid version initially.

1. Likes That Lead To Real Conversations:

Hinge’s core USP move is enabling users to like specific parts of different profiles – like a prompt or photo – instead of only swiping on profiles like they are an item on a menu.

Also, you can leave comments when something catches your eye. And this is Hinge literally telling you: please, please, don’t start with a ‘hi!’

2. Prompts (Your Built-in Talking Points):

Prompts are your backbone on Hinge. With these prompts, you can make your profile less generic. Plus, these will give you a sort of jumping-off point.

In reality, I’ve seen how some people use these prompts so well, but then there are individuals who just can’t help being their boring selves. But then anyone who is good at it will have a great time using them to vibe with others.

3. Roses And Standouts:

Hinge has ‘Roses’ for its users to give something they like – yep, it’s the dating app’s way of helping you express special interest. Also, the dating app comes with a ‘Standout’ section that is meant to highlight specific profiles.

Of course, you need to use these features sparingly if you are using the free version of the app. Having said that, they really worked for me – and I hope they do for you too!

4. Built-in Safety Tools And Voice Notes:

In late 2025, Hinge bid adieu to video and voice calling. However, you can still make the most of Voice Notes for doing a vibe check quickly before meeting someone in real life.

Also, Hinge has reporting options and safety features to ensure you don’t face any harassment.

How Does Hinge Work? Matches And Conversations:

How Does Hinge Work? Matches And Conversations:

Once you sign up for Hinge, create profiles, and are ready to swipe, you will come across profiles you can like.

If you like a profile and they like you back, then the app matches both of you – and you guys can start chatting.

The thing about Hinge is that it focuses on making the experience personal. As a result, the dating app pushes people towards real interaction and avoids silent matching.

Having said that, Hinge does use standard online dating maths for matching people:

  • Good profile = good matches.
  • A good opening message = good conversation odds.
  • Actually, responses are the best trick that you can have up your sleeve.

Moreover, there are so many users on Hinge who are looking for something real and authentic.

As a result, the app tends to attract relationship-minded individuals as compared to dating apps that give out a casual vibe.

Of course, this isn’t always true, but it happens often enough for everyone to know the difference.

Is Hinge Safe? Safety And Security On Hinge:

Is Hinge Safe? Safety And Security On Hinge:

Apart from the standard safety features, Hinge has a solid safety and security suite tailored to keep creeps and scammers at bay.

In addition to safety features, there is a direct option to get in touch with the Crisis Text Line. Also, there’s a Help Center that offers safety tips.

The safety angle is comprehensive and well thought out, but it’s discreet and makes you feel comfortable.

Also, for a better understanding of how safety is implemented on popular dating apps, I have covered the query thoroughly for Tinder and Bumble in the following blogs:

1. Is Bumble safe?

2. Is Tinder safe?

1. Block List:

You can easily sync your phone’s contact list to the ‘Block List’ on your Hinge.

This must-have feature ensures you never run into anyone you know – and this includes family members, colleagues, and anyone else.

2. Comment Filter:

Comment filer is another safety feature in Hinge, and it is available even to free users. You can easily set auto filters to flag inappropriate and disrespectful comments.

Also, you can use the ‘Hidden Words’ feature for blocking specific phrases, emojis, and words from even appearing in the notifications.

So, Hinge hides away in a section called Hidden Likes. That way, you can view these if you ever want to check, but you can also choose to avoid them. I really like how the dating app lets the user have the final say without stressing you out – goodbye, eggplant emojis!

3. Selfie Verification:

You need to tap on the profile photo section and click on the ‘Safety’ tab – and you will come across ‘Selfie Verification.’ A verified account ensures that you are who you say you are – and more importantly, you are using real pictures.

So to obtain the coveted verification check mark, you need to take a selfie video and provethat you are real.

Hinge does promise that the selfie video will stay private. However, Hinge keeps three screenshots from your selfie video till you delete your account.

Why? For auditing and improving this future, as per the information available on the internet. Also, the app retains information about the results, highlighting whether you passed or failed.

How Much Does Hinge Premium Cost?

How Much Does Hinge Premium Cost

Frankly speaking, I’m super impressed with Hinge’s free version. But I was interested to find out what else does the premium versions offer.

So, I tried out the two paid Hinge plans – Hinge X and Hinge+ – for additional perks. On the basis of my experience, here’s a complete breakdown of what each paid plan offers:

Also, for a better understanding of how the premium version of Hinge fares in comparison to other popular dating apps, I have covered the query thoroughly for Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge in the following blogs:

1. Is Hinge Premium worth it?

2. Is Bumble Premium worth it?

3. Is Tinder Gold worth it?

Hinge+

Price: Starts at $19.99/weekly

What Hinge+ offers?

  • Unlimited likes.
  • Extra dating preferences, including height, politics, family plans, and vices.
  • View everyone who liked you at once with zero blurring.
  • Sorting of incoming likes by recent activity or compatibility.

So, if you are currently living in a big metropolitan and overwhelmed by mindless swiping, Hinge+ is worth the time and money – and you should give it a try before writing it off entirely.

HingeX

Price: Starts at $24.99/weekly

What HingeX offers?

  • All the features available in Hinge+
  • ‘Skip the Line’ to show your profile to others faster.
  • Enhanced recommendations (and better profiles) in the Discover section.
  • ‘Priority Likes’ to ensure your ‘likes’ are on top of the list being shown to your potential matches.

Also, you can purchase à la carte options. This includes ‘Roses’, which, as per Hinge, are twice as likely to get you a date, and ‘Boosts’, which increase your visibility by 11 times.

Who Is Hinge Best For?

Who Is Hinge Best For

Hinge is ideally best suited to anyone who wants more than addictive swiping!

Of course, maybe not marriage tomorrow or a serious relationship by next Friday, but something that is genuine and requires real effort.

Also, Hinge is a pretty good fit if you:

  1. Like good conversations that balance humor and intellect.
  2. Prefer profiles that scream ‘good personality.’
  3. Are into meeting people based on actual compatibility analysis, and not just luck or good angles.

And if you are exhausted of dating apps but not exhausted enough to entirely give up on love, Hinge is your best shot – it’s the least tiring dating app out there!

Is Hinge A Good Dating App? Is It Worth Downloading?

If you are seeking a real relationship and not a casual fling, then Hinge is absolutely worth your time – you must download it and give it a try.

There are multiple features that are available with the free version – and this is very rare.

Moreover, the dating app clearly prioritizes helping users meet someone who is right for them – and this is unmatched.

Plus, I think Hinge does everything possible to ensure that you feel safe and comfortable.

Also, the best part? I’ve tested Hinge in different locations – from big cities to small suburbs. And I saw that Hinge does offer better results as compared to some of the popular dating apps.

So, if you really want to delete a dating app from your phone because you met someone special, then Hinge is literally your best bet.
