Well, to be honest, most dating apps don’t have read receipts, in contrast to social media apps that invariably come with these receipts. This choice ensures you can read your messages at your own pace without the immediate pressure to reply.

And while all that is great, I always try to find out two things before using any dating app:

  1. Does the app notify screenshots?
  2. Does the app have read receipts?

Sorry if it sounds somewhat shady. But it always helps me have a better understanding of any dating app. On that note, here I am ready to find out whether or not Hinge has read receipts.

Stay tuned.

Read receipts are a common feature on most social media platforms and apps.

But when it comes to dating apps, things are a little different. While popular dating apps like Bumble and Hinge don’t offer this feature, OkCupid and Tinder do as part of their premium subscriptions.

Perhaps the only dating app that offers the Read Receipts feature for free is eHarmony. On this dating app, the classic double-tick mark indicates that the recipient has read your message.

Sadly, there is no official statement from Hinge on plans to incorporate this feature anytime soon. Also, they have not expressed their reasoning behind plans to introduce this feature.

What You Can Do Instead?

Does Hinge have read receipts? Nope!

However, you can depend on Hinge’s ‘Your Turn’ feature. Once you make a match on the app, you have sent a text to your match.

Now, if this person fails to reply within the next few days, you can open the chat and click on the three dots. From here, just select the ‘Invite to Chat’ option. This feature is useful for notifying your match that they should reply.

Moreover, Hinge includes a ‘Your Turn Limit’ feature, enabled for all users by default. The purpose of this feature is to ensure that you are not able to interact with new users on the app if you have several unanswered texts from matches in your inbox.

As a result, you need to either reply to those texts or finish the conversation to start connecting with new users again.

TBH, if it has been a few days since your match replied to your texts on Hinge, it usually means they are not just that into you.

Also, this is even more true if you have used the ‘Your Turn’ feature on the app and they still haven’t responded. Most likely, your match has ended the conversation from their end.

So, it’s best to focus on your other matches and conversation on the app.

What Are The Benefits Of Turning On Read Receipts?

What Are The Benefits Of Turning On Read Receipts

Read receipts are a useful tool, especially for some people seeking a genuine improvement in their overall online dating experience. Yep! For me, this feature has three major benefits that can really add value to your dating app experience.

1. It Offers Absolute Clarity:

With read receipts, you can say goodbye to confusion.

“Did he read my message? Why isn’t he responding? Maybe he hasn’t seen it yet.” – You can eliminate this from your life with read receipts. You will know whether or not a message has been read.

2. It Shows The ‘Active’ Status Of A Person:

If you can see that your match has read your text but hasn’t been replying for days, it’s obvious they are not into you.

Also, it is possible that they aren’t very active on Hinge – and this is a useful piece of information.

3. It Saves Time:

It saves a lot of time! Imagine chatting with someone – and sparks are flying. The conversation is heating up, and then you ask your match out.

Suddenly, they stop replying – and you are so confused. With read receipts, you can see they have read your message, but not replied. That way, you can just save time and move on.

What Are The Downsides Of Turning On Read Receipts?

What Are The Downsides Of Turning On Read Receipts

Having listed the three benefits of read receipts, it is only natural to explore their potential downsides. So, let’s check those out:

1. It Creates Anxiety:

Seeing the ‘read’ notification accompanied by a very long silence is so painful – sometimes more than not knowing. It is so much easier to deal with ambiguity than with a clear rejection.

2. It Appears To Be Demanding Or Insecure:

When someone gets a text accompanied by a read receipt, they will know you activated it intentionally. For some people, this seems a little too intense. Also, it might feel like you are trying to track their behavior from the first conversation.

3. It Eliminates Plausible Deniability:

For me, there is a lot of social grace and etiquette in not having any idea why a hot guy didn’t continue the conversation. Perhaps, they are busy at work or down with a fever. Or maybe they are just giving it some time, thinking about a witty response.

So, when you see the ‘read’ notification and get no reply, all those understanding, gentle possibilities can easily vanish.
